How to Price Drywall Installation

Price drywall per square foot of finished surface, with finish level, texture, repairs and removal as separate lines and waste added to the sheets. Here are the published rates, what moves a quote, and a worked example.

What moves the price

Calculate sheets with waste first

Wall area is the room perimeter times the ceiling height, and ceiling area is length times width. Add them, deduct doors and windows, add a waste allowance, then divide by the sheet area and round up. A 14×12 ft room with 8 ft walls and a ceiling is 584 sq ft; after 40 sq ft of openings that is 544 sq ft net, and with 10 percent waste you order 19 sheets of 4×8. The drywall estimate calculator does the area, waste and rounding for you.

Set a minimum charge

A single patch can cost as much to reach as a bigger job. Set a minimum job charge from your crew's hourly cost times the real time a small job takes, and batch several repairs into one visit where you can. See how to calculate labor cost and your overhead rate for the inputs.

A worked quote

One 14×12 ft room with 8 ft walls and a ceiling, using example rates (yours will differ):

Drywall: 19 sheets (544 sq ft net + 10% waste) × $14$266.00
Hang and finish: 544 sq ft × $2.25$1,224.00
Total$1,490.00

Check it against the market: $1,490 over 544 sq ft is about $2.74 per sq ft installed, inside Angi's $1.50 to $3 overall range. The $2.25 hang-and-finish labor rate is above Angi's $1 to $2.10 labor-only range because it bundles finishing and covers your overhead and profit; confirm yours with the job price calculator. The $14 sheet price is an example below Angi's $20 average, so use your supplier's price. Texture, patches and haul-away are not included; add them as separate lines. These figures are examples, not recommended prices.
