Typical installed price for interior painting
These are consumer-facing figures from Angi's 2026 cost guides, not rules. They show where the market sits so you can tell whether your price is far above or below it.
| What is priced | Angi 2026 range |
|---|---|
| Whole interior, per sq ft of floor area | $2 – $6 (average $2.75 walls only, $4.70 with trim and ceilings) |
| Walls only (surface) | $1 – $2 per sq ft |
| Smooth ceiling | $1 – $3 per sq ft |
| Accent walls | $2 – $6 per sq ft |
| Baseboard and trim | $1 – $3 per linear ft (up to $6 if hard to reach) |
| Sanding and patching | $0.50 – $0.75 per sq ft |
By room, Angi lists a 10×10 ft room at $200 to $600, 12×12 ft at $290 to $870 and 16×16 ft at $515 to $1,540. By room type: bathroom $200 to $400, bedroom $300 to $750, kitchen $300 to $750, living room $900 to $2,000. The national average for a whole house is $2,022, with most jobs between $965 and $3,089, based on 65,117 projects reported by Angi pros.
What moves the price
- Labor. Angi puts labor at 75 to 95 percent of a professional interior job (60 to 90 percent in its room guide). Hourly rates it cites are $20 to $50 for a painter and $20 to $40 for a handyman.
- Ceiling height. A 10 ft ceiling adds about $1 per sq ft; cathedral ceilings above 12 ft need scaffolding and cost the most.
- Coats and color change. Going light over dark needs extra coats. Angi puts each added coat at $50 to $70 per 300 to 400 sq ft of wall.
- Prep and repairs. Drywall repair averages $600; wallpaper removal about $3 per sq ft; popcorn ceiling removal $1 to $2 per sq ft.
- Paint. $15 to $40 per gallon in the house guide ($20 to $70 in the room guide), covering 300 to 400 sq ft. Primer is about $10 per quart.
Calculate paintable area and paint first
Wall area is the room perimeter times the ceiling height, minus doors and windows. A 14×12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings is 2 × (14 + 12) × 8 = 416 sq ft; subtract one door (20 sq ft) and two windows (15 sq ft each) for 366 sq ft. The ceiling is 14 × 12 = 168 sq ft. The painting estimate calculator does this for you and rounds up the gallons.
Set a minimum charge
A single closet or touch-up can cost more in driving, setup and cleanup than it earns. Set a minimum job charge from your hourly cost times the real time a small job takes. See how to calculate labor cost and your overhead rate for the inputs.
A worked quote
One 14×12 ft room, 8 ft ceilings, two coats, using example rates (yours will differ):
| Walls: 366 sq ft × $2.25 | $823.50 |
| Ceiling: 168 sq ft × $1.75 | $294.00 |
| Paint: 4 gallons × $40.00 | $160.00 |
| Supplies (tape, plastic, rollers) | $75.00 |
| Total | $1,352.50 |
|---|
Check it against the market: Angi lists a 12×12 ft room at $290 to $870, so this is high for a bare room but includes the ceiling and a labor rate that must also cover overhead. If you are far above local quotes, check your rate before cutting it. These figures are examples, not recommended prices.
Common mistakes
- Copying a national average instead of building the price from your own labor hours and overhead.
- Quoting one lump sum, so the customer cannot see ceilings, trim and prep and negotiates the whole price.
- Not stating how many coats are included and who supplies the paint.
- Skipping prep, then absorbing patching and priming time.
- Taking no deposit. Read how to write a contractor estimate for deposit wording.
