Typical prices for lawn mowing
These are consumer-facing figures from 2026 cost guides, not rules. They show where the market sits so you can tell whether your price is far above or below it.
| What is priced | Published 2026 range |
|---|---|
| Mowing per visit, national (Angi) | $49 – $203, average $123 |
| Mowing per visit, typical (LawnStarter) | $44 – $71, average $57 |
| Mowing per visit, 1/8 to 1/4 acre (HomeGuide) | $30 – $85 |
| Mow, trim and blow per visit (Housecall Pro) | $50 – $80 |
| Weekly plan, per visit (Housecall Pro) | $43 – $70 |
| Overgrown lawn or first cut (HomeGuide / Housecall Pro) | $70 – $150 / $70 – $150+ |
| Per hour (Angi / LawnStarter / Housecall Pro) | $25 – $60 / $32 – $68 / $32 – $68 |
| Per acre, per visit (Angi / Housecall Pro) | $50 – $200 |
| Per square foot (Angi / LawnStarter) | $0.01 – $0.06 |
| Edging (HomeGuide) | $0.50 – $1.00 per linear foot, usually included |
| Weekly plan (Angi) | $65 – $100 per week |
The sources disagree because they sample different yards and services. Angi's national range is wider and higher than HomeGuide's and LawnStarter's. Housecall Pro's figures come from its own customers' invoices over 12 months. Compare several sources and your local competitors.
Price by lawn size
| Lawn size | Angi, per visit | LawnStarter, per visit |
|---|---|---|
| Small, under 5,000 sq ft (20–30 min) | $50 – $65 | — |
| 1/4 acre (30–45 min) | $65 – $85 | $49 – $69 (1/4 to 1/2 acre) |
| 1/2 acre (45–60 min) | $90 – $130 | $59 – $114 (1/2 to 1 acre) |
| 1 acre (1.5–2 hours) | $150 – $225 | $99 – $264 (1 to 2 acres) |
| 2 acres or more | $90 per hour or more, per operator | $278 – $449 (over 2 acres) |
Housecall Pro lists about $30 to $40 for a 1/8 acre lawn and $60 to $150 for 1 acre. Per-acre prices usually fall on larger lots because the crew spends less time repositioning equipment.
Three ways to price a lawn
- Flat price per visit. The easiest for customers to understand. Work out the on-site time, multiply by your target hourly rate, and round to a clean number.
- Per hour. Best for cleanups and overgrown lawns where the time is unpredictable. Angi says established pros target $50 to $90 per hour per operator in 2026.
- Per acre or per square foot. Useful for large properties. Angi says square-foot pricing is uncommon except on very small lots, and Housecall Pro says there is no reliable per-square-foot benchmark. To check a flat price, divide it by the lawn's square footage.
What moves the price
- Lawn size and shape. Open rectangles are quick; lots with beds, trees and tight corners take longer.
- Terrain and access. LawnStarter says steep slopes, garden beds and hard-to-reach areas raise the cost.
- Grass condition. An overgrown yard needs more passes and bagging, so quote the first cut separately.
- Frequency. Weekly visits are shorter and cost slightly less per visit than biweekly or monthly cuts.
- What is included. Trimming, edging and blowing are usually in the base price. Bagging, leaf cleanup and weed control are add-ons.
- Travel and minimums. HomeGuide says most contractors have a 1-hour minimum, and Housecall Pro lists a travel fee for long-distance jobs.
Check the price against your costs
Estimate the on-site time plus drive time to the next stop, multiply by your hourly cost, then add fuel, equipment wear, insurance and overhead. Route density matters: five lawns on one street earn more per hour than five scattered across town. See how to calculate labor cost and your overhead rate, and use the hourly rate calculator to find your floor.
A worked first-month quote
One 1/4 acre lawn on weekly service, using example rates (yours will differ). On-site time: mowing 30 minutes, trimming and edging 15 minutes, blowing and cleanup 10 minutes, so 55 minutes. At a target of $70 per hour, 55 ÷ 60 × $70 = $64.17, rounded to $65.
| First cut, overgrown, 1 × $110 | $110.00 |
| Three further weekly visits, 3 × $65 | $195.00 |
| First-month total | $305.00 |
|---|
Later months: 4 × $65 = $260.00. Check it against the market: $65 sits inside Angi's $65 to $85 for a 1/4 acre lawn and HomeGuide's $30 to $85 per visit, $260 for four visits sits inside Angi's $65 to $100 per week, and $110 is inside the $70 to $150 range for an overgrown first cut. These figures are examples, not recommended prices.
Common mistakes
- Pricing an overgrown first cut at the recurring rate.
- Forgetting drive time, so a cheap-looking lawn loses money once the route is counted.
- Not saying whether edging, bagging and cleanup are included.
- Skipping a written estimate. Read how to write a contractor estimate for what to include.
